I fell off writing these story notes in my scramble to get stories done balanced with work & life... But let's dive back in.
After huge research for the samurai story "Per my last attack on your castle," I needed to do something a bit shorter and lighter. Also, after more than a year of fairly grim stories, it was time to slip some comedy in.
This was also an experiment in telling a story in an unusual form - that is, a company newsletter, but with lots of details that tell a story - building the world the characters live in, and throwing out strong hints at what is going to happen in the near future. So it follows the format of your average email newsletter, and the type of items you normally see in those, but with a story arc that builds up as you read through the news items.
Obviously, the communications team that writes this newsletter is in on the plan to destroy the space station.
More subtle, my intent is that Galactic Admiral Trox Mandible pet Boopsy is also an agent of the resistance.
The influences should be obvious - Star Wars and that field of space fantasy opera. In particular, I looked back to the Lensman novels of E. E. "Doc" Smith, which I read many years ago. These books are important pulp sci-fi Star Wars precursors that fuse melodramatic action with the space genre - think huge space battles, square-jawed heroes, epic adventure, order vs. chaos.
Because this is a fairly light story, I kept the strokes broad with recognisable parody of space opera types.
Overall, this was fun to throw together, both as a something that veers towards comedy, and as a creative experiment in telling a story in an unusual form.
